i love screensavers
sigh... screensavers.
in the glory days of computers being new and exciting, CRT computer monitors had a problem of burning an image into themselves if the screen didn't change for a long time. what was the solution? screensavers! and boy, did animators have fun putting these together. surely you remember the flying toasters from after dark, right? or how about bad dog? 3D maze? how about all the screensavers that came with windows 98 desktop themes? ahhhhh, what fun!
of course, screensavers aren't gone gone. you can still buy the classic marine aquarium by Jim Sachs. and 3Planesoft is still creating new 3D-animated screensavers to this day. but the stock screensavers that come with windows and mac are sparse and not as fun as they were on older versions of the respective OSes. for windows, they haven't added any new savers since vista, which is a real shame. and really, if you're using a high-definition LCD monitor, you don't need a screensaver, for your monitor won't have the issues that screensavers were designed to remedy in the first place.
but dang it, those animations are just so much fun to watch. and create, i'm sure. so what the heck, use them anyway! no one's going to stop you, right?
