i don't want to be defined by only one thing
there's an incentive on the internet to put yourself in a box. when you're on a big social media platform, the accounts you follow, the posts you like, and the stuff you yourself post, put you inside a box of "this is who you are and this is what you're into". that's where you get stuff like "aesthetics" and "sub-genres of aesthetics" in all their super restrictive glory.
unfortunately, this phenomenon isn't restricted to just social media. on my favorite internet forum of current year, the frutiger aero archive, the site owner once mused the idea of restricting discussions to just frutiger aero, and spinning off everything else to a separate forum. he didn't go through with it, and neither he nor anyone else felt it was necessary anyway, but it really shows how much the internet's powers that be want us to be defined by only one thing, doesn't it?
i think about that on bear, too. sure, i built this website using bear, and i've been blogging for a while, but i mainly built the site to showcase my art. i make music videos, i make music, i take photos, and i occasionally write my thoughts on life as an artist in this weird world we live in. but i don't want to be defined as just a "blogger". and i'm sure that goes for all of you posting here. we don't want to let some arbitrary algorithm define what we see, though neither should we feel pigeonholed under the title of "blogger" just because we have blogs.
and neither should we be defined by what we do for work. i like that i discuss a variety of things on my own blog. i like various art forms, retro computers, the indie web, flower photos, and cute things. sure, i bring up my music video animation business every now and then on this blog, but that doesn't mean that's all i want to talk about.
i don't want to be defined by only one thing. no one should. we are all more than the social media algorithm perceives us.
